Firefighter Injured in Early Morning Blaze

Marijuana grow materials found inside

A firefighter suffered second degree burns after falling through the floor of a burning home Saturday morning.

Fire fighters received a call shortly before 6am that a duplex in the 100 block of Alma Court near East Washington Street and Payran was on fire. 

The duplex sustained severe structural damage and the contents were completely destroyed. Fire department officials say materials from a previous marijuana growing operation were found inside, but had no further details Saturday.

Two families have been misplaced and fire officials say marijuana growing operation may have played a factor in the fire. 

The firefighter who sustained an injury received a second-degree burn on the top of his hand after the glove he was wearing came off partially as he fell through the floor. He received treatment at the scene and did not require hospital transport.

Despite putting out the fire in about 40 minutes, firefighters remained at the scene for the next three hours to make sure all hot spots were fully extinguished and did not rekindle. The total damage of the fire was estimated at $225,000.
