Suspect Drops Gun Downtown During Chase

Residents, shop keepers being asked to not touch the weapon and phone the police right away

 

Police spent Thursday searching the downtown area for a handgun a suspect dropped after a brief chase Thursday morning.

At around 11am a resident reported a man in the Golden Eagle Shopping Center carrying a handgun in his waistband. Police responded and ordered two suspects to stop.

Instead, the men ran, splitting up in different directions. One of the suspects, 23-year-old Petaluma resident Shane DeWalt was arrested right away, but a 17-year-old boy eluded police for about 15 minutes before being found.

As he ran, the teen discarded clothing, which was later found at a downtown store. But the police have not been able to locate the gun and are asking anyone who finds it to not touch it and phone them right away.

DeWalt has been charged with resisting arrest and for a felony no-bail burglary warrant. The teen, who is not being identified because he’s a minor, was arrested for resisting arrest and for nine outstanding warrants.
