Champions become Champions! Lady Mustangs win League Tournament
The St. Vincent women's basketball team defeated Roseland Prep last night 46-34 to capture the championship of the Dave Castleberry League Tournament. Going into the tournament, the Mustangs were the NCL II league champions with an undefeated record of 14-0. Playing without two starters, Rebecca Dodele and Ursyla Baumgarten, St. Vincent relied upon their depth. Trailing at halftime 18-13, the Mustangs used their superior bench strength to even the score at 30-30 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Their tenacious defense eventually wore down the Roseland Knights in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Knights 16-4 to pull away with the win. Leading scorer for the Mustangs was senior Jacalyn Murphy with 16 points. St. Vincent has an impressive overall record of 22-6 which should bode well for a fairly high seed in the NCS tournament that begins on Wednesday of next week.
