Wind up in West Marin for a tasty afternoon

Nothing like an event that stirs up all the senses — the relaxing comfort of a winery tucked in the bosom of West Marin, the sweet taste of premium varietals paired with an array of organic appetizers — all with some music thrown in — benefiting a worthwhile cause — the Gilead House.

Flights and Bites is an annual fund-raiser made possible by West Wind Wines, located at 333 Willow Road in Nicasio. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 24 from 1 to 5 p.m., go to the non-profit Gilead House located in Novato. The transitional house for low-income and often homeless mothers and their children is a place that helps families in need get back on their feet and foster healthy independent living.

According to Gilead House executive director Jacque McLaughlin, Flights and Bites is one of two major annual fundraising events that help provide these necessary services to local moms and families.

West Wind Wines makes the day in the country possible by providing a beautiful setting, McLaughlin said, as well as its wonderful wines including a 2011 Lake Sauvignon Blanc, a special Charbono 2010 Lake, with only 80 acres of it grown in California, a Merlot 2006 Sonoma, a limited supply of Malbec 2007 Lake and Grenache Rose 2012 Potter Valley, as well as a selection of cabernets.

The fine wines will be paired with seven serving stations of organic locally grown appetizers by Debbie Keith Catering with the help of Gilead volunteers in the preparation. The selection will include a herb-lemon risotto, Kahlua cake topped with an oregano leaf, grilled shrimp with a Creole sauce, smoked bratwurst slices topped with powdered cocoa nibs and fresh oregano leaf, pizza with grilled sun-dried tomato, ground beef sliders, and of course the selection would not be complete without a selection of divine chocolates.

Music will be provided by JamDaddy, performing a blend of rock ‘n’ roll, pop and the blues including some great danceable covers as well as original tunes.

A limited number of tickets are available for $30 online at www.gileadhouse.org or $35 at the door. Call 415-895-5575 for more information or find us on Facebook.
