And the New Dairy Princess Is...

Every year, the local chapter of the California Milk Advisory Board picks a goodwill ambassador for the industry

Dairies have a long history in Sonoma and Marin counties, started by the first Italian and Swiss immigrants arriving to the area.

To honor that heritage and support the industry that continues to play an integral part of Petaluma’s economy, each year the California Milk Advisory Board picks a Dairy Princess.

What is a Dairy Princess, you might ask?

Put simply, she’s the public face of the local dairy industry, a goodwill ambassador who gives talks at local schools, attends parades and ribbon cuttings. It’s a tradition started in 1957 to educate the town folk about the dairy business and remind them of what it takes to produce the cheese, butter, milk and yogurt many take for granted.

This past Saturday, St. Vincent High School senior Francesca Gambonini became the local district’s newest Dairy Princess. Gambonini is 17 and will attend California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo in the fall. The sixth generation dairy farmer wants to study agricultural science and become a dairy cattle geneticist upon graduation.

The New Dairy Princess represent an area that includes Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Marin and Solano counties.
