Stock Up on Starts, Plants at Four Local Sales This Weekend
Schools, nonprofits, even the county jail have great offerings for local gardeners
When you are looking for starts, seeds or anything else, consider going to local plant sales at schools, nonprofits and other organizations. That way, when you tend your garden, you’ll be spreading the seeds of goodwill far and wide. Here are a couple upcoming ones:
Petaluma Bounty Community Farm Plant Sale
With thousands of veggie, herb and flower starts and over 100 varieties of tomatoes, this sale may be the only one you need to plan your garden. Discover the latest gardening tips from master gardeners and enjoy fun kids’ activities.

Valley Vista School Teaching Garden’s Annual Plant Sale
Support your local schools by stopping by this event which features heirloom tomatoes in six packs, a variety of veggies, lettuces and other plants. Stay for the unveiling of a new mural of Shollenberger Park at 11:45am and free crafts and games for kids.

Occidental Arts & Ecology Center Spring Biodiversity Plant Sale
This nonprofit’s educational programs focus on community-based strategies for positive social change and effective environmental stewardship. Stock up on rare varieties of plants and tomatoes and stay for the free garden tour at 2pm.
Date: Saturday, May 5 9am-5pm
Location: 15290 Coleman Valley Road, Occidental
Open-pollinated, heirloom and rare varieties of crops such as lettuces and greens, peas, brassicas, chards, onions, leeks, flowers, and herbs. All California Certified Organic, and many started from seeds from their demonstration gardens.

Sonoma County Jail Industries’ Open House & Plant Sale
All plants are grown by inmates in the rehabilitation component of the jail's vocational program. The program also provides free vegetable starts and seeds to any school to use in their own student gardens.
Date: Saturday, May 5. 9 am to 12pm
Location: North County Detention Facility, 2254 Ordinance Road, Santa Rosa
Trees shrubs, perennials, vines, grasses, vegetables, ground covers grown by inmates. No fertilizers or pesticides used. Please bring your own cart or wagon if you have one. No cash. Checks only.
