Occupy Petaluma Collecting Sleeping Bags for Homeless

Asking public to send in checks of $16 or donate used sleeping bags

Members of Occupy Petaluma are collecting sleeping bags to distribute to the homeless, spurred by the recent death of a man who was crushed by a garbage truck after falling asleep in a Dumpster.

“I was moved, we all were moved by the cold, and the poor homeless soul that perished last week,” said Mhana Mason, an Occupy Petaluma member.

The group approached Big 5 to see what they could do and the retailer offered a steep discount on up to 25 sleeping bags. Seventeen have already been collected, but Occupy is hoping for a few more donations by Thursday.

Old sleeping bags are also accepted, although the group asks that you wash them first. For more information and mailing address where to send your check, visit https://www.facebook.com/occupypetalumapage
