Oyster Farm: Photographs of the Drakes Bay Oyster Company by Evvy Eisen

A delicacy enjoyed by the first inhabitants of the Point Reyes Peninsula, rediscovered and cultivated by the early European pioneers and their descendants, oysters are today the basis of a thriving industry documented in photographs by Evvy Eisen at the Petaluma Arts Center.

Eisen spent a year documenting the workers and farm environment of the Drakes Bay Oyster Company. She began photographing the workers when she realized that this group was not included in any documentation of the fate of the oyster farm. Eisen specializes in environmental portraits producing fine art black and white silver gelatin prints, often working on long term projects, which reveal the people involved in socially relevant issues.

This work illustrates a connection between the workers and the community they serve, putting a human face on what has become abstract and theoretical.
