Petaluma Weekend Planner August 5-7

Friday:

will take to the streets with boots in hand on Friday, asking the community to Fill the Boot for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This is the sixth year the Petaluma Fire Department & CAL FIRE Petaluma will hit the streets helping to bring help and hope for those with muscular dystrophy.

If you go: Petaluma’s firefighters will be volunteering their time from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.at East Washington St. and Petaluma Blvd North as well as Petaluma Blvd North & Stony Pt. Road in Petaluma.

Friday:

Summer’s not over quite yet and an outdoor movie is a great way to start the weekend. Tonight the feature film is Disney's TANGLED with music by Midnight Sun. In addition to the free movie, there will be children's activities including a bouncy house and face painting, a barbecue, movie snacks and raffle prizes. Plus the wonderful sponsors bring out a surprise dessert for all. Yum.

If you go: The free event begins at 6:30 pm with the movie beginning at dusk in , 320 N. McDowell Boulevard. Don't forget your blankets and low chairs!

Friday:

A new exhibit, Anonymous: 19th and 20th Century Photographs and Quilts by Unknown Artists from the Collection of Robert Flynn Johnson, will run August 5 through September 18 at Petaluma Arts Center, 230 Lakeville Street.

Anonymous photography has a magical and mysterious quality. The 19th and 20th century images assembled here by collector and curator Robert Flynn Johnson are poignant, humorous, erotic and disturbing. Their subject is the human condition. Although the artists are unknown, the photographs could be made by anyone who has ever used a camera.

If you go: There is a suggested donation of $5 and the exhibit is open from noon to 4 p.m.at the Petaluma Arts Center, 230 Lakeville Street. The exhibit continues until September 18th.

Friday and Saturday:

The award winning solo show Wretch Like Me created by actor, journalist and National Endowment for the Arts-honored theater critic David Templeton explores a wild ride through a 1970s Southern California landscape of spaced-out believers, tongues-spouting surfers, and radical evangelical puppeteers. The plot-driven storytelling also includes cleverly conjured descriptions of an acid-dropping minister named Reverend Dude, an affably sinister alien puppet and a beautiful believer.

If you go: Tickets are between $10-$18 and the show is at 8 p.m. at , 3333 Petaluma Blvd. N.

Saturday:

Bring your friends and family over for this awesome event with performances by The Devil Makes Three, The Mother Hips, Cornmeal, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, SambaDá, Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers, Big Light, Red Meat, Hillside Fire, Stompy Jones, Craig Horton, The Peter Welker Sextet featuring Jeff Oster, Smokehouse Gamblers, Fire Child, Skylark, and Kala.

The Petaluma Music Festival is a family-friendly event with a unique variety of  indie-band music for people of all ages. This year’s festival will also feature fine beers of the, an extensive selection of award-winning Sonoma County wines and locally grown and produced cheese, bread, olive oil, and organic farm produce for tasting (separate purchase), a unique silent auction and celebrity autographed guitar raffle, a shaded VIP seating section with complimentary hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer, as well as specialty foods and crafts from local businesses.

If you go: Tickets are $25, $75 VIP Premium (shaded reserved seating with complimentary wine, beer, and light appetizers), children 12 and under free with paying adult. Tickets can be bought by clicking here or at , the , the Last Record Store in Santa Rosa, and People's Music in Sebastopol.

Ticket prices increase $5 on day of festival. Gates open and music begins at 11 a.m., wine & food tasting from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the , 174 Fairgrounds Drive in Petaluma. Bring along a blanket or low chair and find a great place to watch these fantastic bands performing on three stages!

Sunday:

Basket maker Charles Kennard offers a materials and techniques workshop featuring the ancient craft of basket making. Mr. Kennard is a long-time student of central California-Indian technique: twined and coiled baskets. In this hands-on workshop, Mr. Kennard will teach participants how to use the marsh plant tule to make California Indian-style baskets, experimenting with various twined weaves to make patterns.

These baskets, sometimes called “Indian paper bags” are very serviceable and quickly made. Mr. Kennard will show a collection of twined baskets, big and small, that he’s made using tule and rush. Bring kitchen scissors, small diagonal wire clippers (optional), and lunch. This workshop is for teen and adults (13+).
