Petaluma Health Center Hosting Health & Wellness Fair

The event marks National Health Center Week.

Petaluma Health Center will host a Health and Wellness Fair later this week.

The event marking National Health Center Week will be held on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. and is open to the public.

This event's “Celebrating America’s Health Centers: Transforming Health Care in Our Local Communities ” theme highlights important role health centers play communities throughout the nation, promoting preventative care and addressing the causes of many illnesses across a wide socio-economic swath.

“We provide a range of services onsite – primary care services, dentistry, mental health services, and a variety of wellness and fitness programs,” Petaluma Health Center CEO Kathie Powell said in a prepared statement.

“When people have a medical home that forms a relationship between individual patients, their personal providers, and the patient’s family, they stay healthier. We provide a medical home for each of our patients.”

Powell and Petaluma Mayor David Glass will make opening remarks when the festival kicks off at the main facility at 1179 North McDowell Boulevard.

The event will include facility tours along with information about the Affordable Care Act, a “Zumba-thon,” free health screenings, food and prizes and activities for kids.

Community Health Centers have been in existence for over 45 years and serve more than 22 million people nationwide. They are considered a bright spot in America's health care system, PHC officials say, noting that evidence shows patients choose health centers because they are convenient, affordable and offer a range of high quality health services from a team of caring professionals.

In addition to providing quality care, health centers:

  • Reduce income and ethnic health disparities nationwide

  • Produce $24 billion in annual health system savings

  • Reduce unnecessary hospitalizations and unnecessary visits to the ER

  • Generate a system of preventive medicine that patients use regularly to stay healthy, thus saving lives
