Rocks' License Pulled for 30 Days

Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control cites repeated calls for service as the main reason

Popular bar and nightclub has had its liquor license suspended for the entire month of June, according to investigators with the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control or ABC.

The suspension is the result of repeated calls for service to the bar, including the incident last December where patrons rioted after police arrested a patron for punching a bouncer.

"If the place is a draw on public service, where there is a large number of calls to police, this kind of action can be done," said Tony Carrancho, supervising investigator at ABC's Santa Rosa office.

The December 13 incident began when police responded to call about a patron who was climbing on sound equipment and punched a bouncer. According to reports, the bouncer took out a Taser and fired into the crowd, agitating some patrons.

But when officers tried to take the suspect into custody, more people came out of the bar and began to move toward the officers, forcing police to call for backup. As many 20 officers responded to the call that night, including officers from the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, California Highway Patrol and the Cotati Police Department.

The incident prompted discussion about the number of bars downtown as wel as reinstating an Alcohol Control Enforcement Officer who would work with bars to make sure bartenders and other employees were fully trained and could spot problems before they escalated.

Also in late November, several fights broke out at the club and last year there were more than 50 calls for service to The Rocks, including for a stabbing and a robbery, according to police.
