Here Comes The Bride

Never underestimate the power of an experienced seamstress who can transform and personalize a wedding dress along with the rest of the wedding party's wardrobe.

It's the perfect time of year for tying the knot. Warm weather weddings - especially in our beautiful wine country - are enjoyable events for everyone involved.

Behind the scenes, weddings are full of details - not the least of which is the wedding dress.

There are as many types of wedding dresses as there are brides. For sentimental reasons, a bride might decide to wear a family heirloom dress that belonged to her mother or other relative. Other brides purchase off-the-rack wedding dresses or second-hand dresses. Prices for these dresses can be very reasonable, however, there is usually limited size availability. Even boutique dresses usually need adjustments.

I recently stopped in at Elegant Alterations and Tailoring and spoke with owner Parvin about these challenges. Parvin explained how a little nip and tuck can make the wedding dress and the bride look wonderful.

1) Sometimes the only thing wrong with a dress is adjusting the fit and making sure the bride is wearing the the correct undergarments. A seamstress can guide the bride towards what needs to be fixed and what undergarments will make the dress look its best on her.

2) Wedding dresses can have necklines altered, sleeves removed and hems adjusted. A seamstress can look at the dress and determine on the spot how to change the look of the dress.

3) Bridal accessories can also do wonders for a dress. A sash change or other accessory additions can make a huge difference in how a dress looks.  A seamstress can create stylish and attractive accessories to complement the dress - and you!

Don't forget the rest of the wedding party - a seamstress can adjust tuxedos and suits, bridesmaids outfits, and mother of the bride and groom outfits.

The day after the wedding, Parvin suggested getting the wedding dress cleaned, boxed and put away to keep it looking its best.

We also touched on the issue of the dreaded bridesmaid dress.  Parvin suggested bringing the dress in after the wedding and seeing what can be done to remake the dress so that it doesn't spend the rest of its life in the back of the closet.

Elegant Alterations and Tailoring is located 231-c North McDowell Blvd (near the Plaza North Starbucks). 707-766-6321
