Home Brew Week at Starbucks

Starbucks gives a lot of good coffee making advice during Home Brewed Coffee Week on Facebook and Google+

I think we can all agree that Starbucks knows coffee.  As part of the At Home with Coffee Week, they have been sharing home brewed coffee tips on Google+  and Facebook.

Here is a sampling of some of the advice Starbucks has been giving for getting a great cup of coffee at home:

  • Don’t store your coffee in the fridge or freezer. The best way to keep coffee fresh is in an airtight container, in a cool dark place. When coffee is placed in a refrigerator, it will absorb moisture and any smells in your fridge, affecting the coffee’s taste and quality. That’s why it’s best to keep your coffee in a separate, airtight container.
  • Coffee-press, pour-over, or coffee pot—the recipe for great coffee is always the same: 2 Tbsp. of fresh ground coffee for every 6 oz. of water
  • What’s the best way to make foam without a machine? You can use a manual or electric milk frother. We have not tried this method from +The Kitchn, but it looks interesting: http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-milk-foam-without-100716.
  • Best way to make iced coffee at home? 1) Make coffee (concentrated) 2) Add ice 3) Wait a few moments 4) Iced coffee!
  • To clean a French press, tap out the grounds as much as possible into the trash or compost; then swirl water to get the rest of the grounds out. Use soapy water to clean the body and lid of the press, and gently rinse of the mesh screen. It’s work, but worth it for a press.
  • To use the press, should you use coarse ground coffee?  Yes, use coarse ground coffee in your press. Your barista can grind it just the right way for you if you’d like.
  • How long can the coffee stay in the press, suspended above the grounds before it starts to taste bad? It’s best to brew it fresh and drink it fresh. We recommend you enjoy it within 20 minutes, while it is still hot.
  • Is there an easier way to clean it than to clean out the grounds with a paper towel? I can’t dump the grounds down the sink? if you are cleaning out a coffee press, we would recommend using a spoon or a spatula. Coffee grounds are compostable and are good for gardening.
