Maggie (Margaret) Fishman, long time Penngrove resident and career educator, is announcing her candidacy for the Santa Rosa Junior College Board of Trustees.
Fishman is running to represent District 2, which includes Petaluma, Penngrove, the Lakeville corridor, South-western Sonoma County and parts of Marin County. The formal announcement will take place at a kickoff event slated for 5:30 pm, Friday June 27 at the home of Leland Fishman, 523 4th Street, Petaluma.
The election will be in November of 2014 Maggie Fishman is a graduate of Santa Rosa Junior College and Sonoma State University.
She has a long history of professional and personal devotion to education, including serving as a program administrator at USC’s College of Public Administration in Sacramento, and over 18 years of classroom instruction at Montgomery High School.
She taught History, American Government, and Economics at all levels including many years in English as a Second Language.
“My interest in the JC is long standing,” Fishman says. “it is where I began college. It is where a great many of my students have gone to train for careers or to start 4-year college programs as I did.”
“The Junior College is an extraordinary asset to Sonoma County; and the Petaluma Campus is a cultural and education hub for us in the South County.”
“I will continually look at the changing demographics of the Junior College District. The courses and services provided must constantly evolve to meet the changing demands of students, businesses and the community at large. I will bring a fresh perspective to the Board and a strong voice for South County. That is a healthy thing.”
Fishman has been endorsed by the both Congressman Mike Thompson, who represents the northern portion of the 2nd District, and Congressman Jared Huffman, who represents the southern portion.
In addition, she is endorsed by three Petaluma City Council members: Mike Healy, Gabe Kearney, Teresa Barrett, and by Mayor David Glass.
Tom Joynt, a retired Petaluma educator, supporting Fishman’s candidacy, said, “Maggie Fishman has the ability to reach a broad range of supporters and energize them about educational issues -- especially the Junior College.”
