Prius Charger Explodes, Starts Fire, Kills Cat

Marin county couple doing all the right things, but sometimes even that's not enough.

Bay City News Service

An explosion and fire that may have been sparked by a Toyota Prius charging in a garage damaged a two-story condominium in Corte Madera and killed a cat Tuesday evening, a fire official and a resident said.

It is believed that the fire at 44 Creekside Court, which was reported at 6:25 p.m., was sparked by a problem with the Prius' electrical charging system, Corte Madera Fire Chief Roger Sprehn said.

An explosion occurred, resulting in a fire that spread from the garage to the first and second floors of the condo, Sprehn said.

The blaze was controlled in about 30 minutes. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $250,000. The garage was burned by the flames, but the living area of the condo sustained mostly heat and smoke damage, Sprehn said.

Ronald Gremban, who lives in the condominium with his domestic partner Lynne McAllister, said this morning that he was not home at the time of the fire.     McAllister was at home but escaped the blaze safely, Gremban said.

One of the couple's two cats died in the fire, and the other is not yet accounted for, Gremban said. The condo is uninhabitable, he said.

Twenty firefighters from Corte Madera, Larkspur, Kentfield, Tiburon, San Rafael and Southern Marin responded to the blaze, Sprehn said.

$250,000, one cat dead and the other missing?
Hope the gas savings and the "holier than thou because I drive a hybrid" attitude were worth it. They aren't called "Toyota Pious" for nothing.

Oh Bee Ben, your lack of compassion is truly saddening. These people, who you don't have any clue about, lost their home and possessions and their animal, and this is what you have to say?. Stay classy.

The operative word here is "schadenfreude"

"Marin county couple doing all the right things..."
Only in Marin is charging your car "doing the right thing." So I'm doing the wrong thing when I fillup with gas? Liberal Arrogance! (And yes, I know it's not just in Marin...Sonoma County, SFO, etc., just as arrogant.)

We have failed our kids who are now in their 20s. The jobs they should have are not there and no oneRead More seems to care. What you are seeing is the underground economy, which is how they survive. No, it's not good, but it is how they are surviving. Talk to your Congressional representatives! They want real jobs and real lives!
You are fun!

I think that showing The Hunger Games in this venue is a mistake. These outdoor family film showingsRead More do attract families, and frequently families with younger children. It would be close to child abuse to permit a younger child to watch this movie. Not so sure it would be a good idea for teens either. I believe that this choice was not well thought out. I hope it can be changed to something that would be beneficial for all ages to see. For example, I recommend a film called "Like Stars on Earth" directed by Aamir Khan. A very moving and thoughtful film.
