Patch's weekly roundup of blogs from across the country.

Written by Penny Riordan

Patch bloggers write about a variety of our topics on our site. From tips on updating your resume to reflections on being a good mother, bloggers have a lot to say!

Here’s some of the best blogs we saw this week:

1. When news broke on Wednesday that author Tom Clancy died, writerRobin Tidwell posted a blogreflecting on the author's influence on her writing.

In her blog on Crevecoeur Patch, Tidwell wondered if even at the end of Clancy's life if he was still second guessing some of his writing. As a writer Tidwell wrote that she could relate.

"‘No one will ever read my books again. I’m a failure; I left that ending totally hanging. It must have all been a dream. I’m not a real writer, a real author . . . God, I hope my publicist never tells that one story about me!'"

2. Are you a star volunteer? Are you constantly giving your time to organizations in your community?

Then if you're on the hunt for a job, you want to make sure you include your volunteer experience on your resume, according to blogger Rachel Reese

Reese writes from her blog on Darien Patch about volunteering that including specific titles and skills you did while volunteering is a big boost for your resume.

"Never underestimate the power of volunteering to get you hired, whether you have been a prolific volunteer for years or even if only had a temporary three month position. You just need to articulate it in a way that gets you to those magic words: You’re hired!"

3. If you're a mother you'll relate to this post. On Mentor Patch,Devone shared all of the doubts she has about how she is raising her son.

This week the thoughts came up while cleaning up yet another sticky mess on the dining room table.

"As I stood there trying to clean up the spill without bending over (I have chronic back pain, so I tend to avoid leaning over whenever possible) I heard my sweet little boy's sweet little voice say, 'You a good mom.'"

As it turns out, her son actually said 'you a good mop,' but you mothers out there probably understand.

4. With the government shutdown still ongoing passport issuing is on hold, but a travel blogger offered this tip on Patch.

Some countries will not allow you to fly if your passport is expiring in two months or less.

Blogger Cathy Lee Taylor wrote that it's not anyone's responsibility to know this but the traveler, so it's important to check.

She provides a list of countries with this rule on her blog on Mission Viejo Patch.

5. This time of year there are plenty of photo opportunities with fall in full swing.

Sometimes a blog can be as simple as a few photos, which is what blogger Scott Lorenz did on Plymouth-Canton Patch.

Lorenz posted several photos he took while riding in a hot air balloon over Michigan during peak fall foliage season.

Patch is open platform where readers can post, comment and recommend stories on the site. Any user is welcome to blog, by going to the ‘blogs’ tab from the homepage.
