Saturday: North Bay Rowing Club Junior Crew to "row" 100 miles to raise $10,000 over 12 hours!

Members of NBRC's Junior Crew, hailing from 6 area high schools, will pull together Saturday to row 100 virtual miles in attempt to raise 10,000 actual dollars to purchase wakeless launch.

The North Bay Rowing Club has a growing Juniors team, made up of 30 high school students from Casa Grande, Petaluma High, Tech, St. VIncent's, Analy and Mary Carillo.

On Saturday, April 6th, on the corner of Petaluma Boulevard and Western Avenue, by Central Market, they'll be pounding out the miles on ergometers, or "ergs" (rowing machines) in an attempt to cover 100 virtual miles and raise 10,000 actual dollars. Four rowers at a time will go at it in 90-minute time slots, and one erg will be kept spinning continuously for 12 hours, from 7 am till 7 pm. This would mean keeping a 2:14.2 split time for 12 hours straight, covering 160,934 meters.

It's a lofty goal, but one that NBRC Juniors Coach Will Whalen counts as doable by this team of dedicated youth. Supporters can make tax-deductible donations to NBRC Juniors by sponsoring a rower for a period of time (from $2.50 a minute to $150 an hour) or just making a check out to NBRC Juniors and sending it to 747 Cherry Street, Petaluma, 94952.

Anyone who's hooked on Cross Fit knows what an erg workout can do to the mind and the body, so Whalen and his Juniors hope that Petalumans will come out and cheer on the tough young rowers.

The wakeless launch(es) the club hopes to purchase "will enable us to better follow our teams and decrease the disturbance to other river enthusiasts," he says. The workout on the ergs will replace the team's usual Saturday water workout, and will help them gear up for their third race of the season, the 510 Sprints in Oakland on April 15th. The next race is the Southwest Regionals in Sacramento on May 3rd-5th.
