Levine Calls for Renewed Legislation to Protect our Coast

Today Assemblymember Marc Levine (D-San Rafael) called for the California Coastal Commission to sponsor legislation in 2014 to create an administrative penalty process that holds egregious violators of the Coastal Act accountable.

“California’s coastline is a national treasure; one that should be protected for future generations,” said Assemblymember Levine.  “I fully support new laws that protect our coast.  Such laws must effectively punish violators in an appropriate and workable manner.”

Today Assemblymember Levine sent a letter to the Commission laying out the problems with AB 976 which was sponsored by the Commission and failed passage last week.  His letter pointed out the fatal flaws in the bill and made suggestions for future legislation.  He also reached out to and met today with Commissioners Wendy Mitchell and Mark Vargas to discuss working with the Commission on this issue moving forward.

The letter concluded, “For several years, the Commission has sponsored failed efforts to create administrative penalties.   We have some time to get this right before the next session.  But it is absolutely imperative that we have a strong, workable bill that passes in the next session.  I hope we can work together to make this happen.”
