15 Year Boy Struck by Drunk Driver While Crossing Street

Suffered major injuries when hit at crosswalk at East Washington and Edith

A 15-year-old boy suffered major injuries when he was struck by a drunk driver while crossing East Washington Avenue and Edith Street, near Whole Foods, on Saturday night.

The boy was crossing with friends in a marked crosswalk at around 12:40am on New Year's Eve and was the first to enter the intersection, according to Petaluma Police Sgt. Ken Savano.

The driver, Wesley Pickford, 20, of Novato, was driving westbound in the right lane and reportedly did not see the stopped vehicles or the pedestrians crossing the street, police say. The vehicle struck the boy, causing him to fly over over the car and land on the pavent. He was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

A breathalyzer test showed Pickford's blood alcohol level was .15 percent, twice the legal amount, according to police.

Pickford was arrested and booked on felony DUI charges and iss being held on $30,000 bail at Sonoma County Jail. The victim, who is not being identified, is listed in stable condition.
