101 Accident Causes Grass Fire and Power Outage Wednesday

3,000 PG&E customers lost power after a car struck a utility pole Wednesday afternoon

A car that struck a utility pole on Highway 101 near San Antonio Road Wednesday caused a 35 acre grass fire that temporarily shut down all northbound traffic.

The accident, which occurred around 2:30pm, also caused some 3,000 PG&E customers to lose power, most of them in West Petaluma. Power was restored to most homes and businesses by 4:30pm.

However, 125 unlucky Petaluma residents were without power Wednesday night, according to spokeswoman Jana Morris.

The pole that was struck was badly damaged and is being replaced.

"There is a significant amount of work that needs to take place before we can re-energize those customers," Morris said.
