Authorites Seek Extradition for Amber Alert Kidnapping Suspect Found in Mexico

Santa Clara County prosecutors are seeking to have a man extradited back to the Bay Area after he allegedly abducted his son in Sunnyvale on Tuesday and was arrested after crossing the border into Mexico.

Mesut Guler, a 22-year-old Turkish national and Sunnyvale resident, was transferred back to the U.S. and the custody of the Pima County Sheriff's Department in Arizona on Wednesday night, according to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials.

Authorities said Guler abducted his 2-week old boy Henry from an apartment complex in the 900 block of Helen Avenue in Sunnyvale at about 4 p.m. Tuesday after he got into an argument with his girlfriend, the boy's mother.

He was taken into custody by Mexican authorities at a checkpoint south of the Sonoran town of Sonoyta and was transferred to the custody of the sheriff's department at 8 p.m. Wednesday along with Henry, who was unharmed, border patrol officials said.

Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office spokesman Sean Webby said the boy's mother flew down to Arizona to reunite with her son.

Assistant District Attorney Deborah Medved said Guler remains in Arizona but prosecutors are seeking to have him returned to Santa Clara County to face kidnapping and parental child abduction charges.

If he waives extradition, Guler could return to the county in a couple of days, otherwise a warrant would have to be obtained from the governor and he could remain in Arizona for a couple of weeks, Medved said.

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety officials said Guler had previously threatened to harm himself and the baby and that the abduction stemmed from an ongoing dispute with the child's mother over his desire to move out of state.
