Bicyclist Injured in Downtown Collision

Police say low sun on the horizon may have caused accident

A woman suffered minor injuries after being struck by a car Tuesday afternoon while bicycling on Western Avenue near English Street, according to Petaluma police.

The incident occurred at 4pm as the car was getting ready to make a left turn onto English Street, knocking the rider to the ground. Police say that the lowered sun on the horizon may have been a factor and are warning motorists to slow down in winter months because of decreased visibility.

Last year, at least two other incidents were attributed to low sun blinding motorists, including a August 2010 accident when a 17-year-old student was hit by a car while crossing at Crinella Drive and a September 2010 accident when two Casa High School track athletes broke their legs after they were struck by a car as they crossed the intersection at Sonoma Mountain Parkway and Monroe.
