Afternoon Bomb Scare Wednesday at Petaluma PD

Suspicious package left under tree near station's front doors.

A citizen walked into the front lobby of the Petaluma Police Department at noon today -- Wednesday -- and notified personnel of a suspicious package sitting near a tree about 15 yards from the station's front doors.

Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office explosive specialists inspected the suspicious item and confirmed the package contained nothing dangerous.

The front public access area of the Petaluma PD was cordoned off as the department waited for the bomb squad to arrive and assess any potential hazard, said the police.

The Petaluma PD is equipped with video surveillance and that evidence is currently being reviewed by investigators.

Any person with any information regarding this incident is asked to contact Officer Ron Klein of the Petaluma Police at 707.781.1211.

Investigators believe the package was left with the intent to cause fear of an explosive device, and this remains an ongoing criminal investigation.

All public access to the Petaluma police is restored.
