Canyon Drive Brush Fire Under Investigation

A brush fire erupted late Monday evening in the grassy hills above Petaluma, and some residents reported "youths" leaving the area about the same time.

A little before 5:30 p.m. on Monday night, a "vegetation fire" was reported to the . It was located behind homes on Canyon Drive off Mountain View Avenue, south of the , with nine fire agencies reporting in response.

The fire was doused before any structures were threatened, and burned about 2 acres, according to the Fire Department report.

Their statement said in detail, "Upon arrival we found about a 1 1/4 acre fire in heavy grass moving rapidly to the east. Initial attack lines were placed off of Canyon drive and eventually off of Glen Eagle Ct. The fire was contained in about 30 minutes with about a 2 hour mop of phase."

The hill is designated Open Space, and one resident reported, "I heard that 'youths' were seen leaving the scene. In the past this is a popular hill for teens to sit and smoke..." The source declined to be identified.

"But it looked scary for awhile with flames 4 to 5 feet high. It's a dry grass hill that the city mows just for this reason," said the exclusive Patch source.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by fire prevention personnel, according to Battalion Chief Phil Sutsos.
