Car Overturns Near Marin-Sonoma Line; Man Faces DUI Charge

Wreck took place Sunday morning off Point Reyes-Petaluma Road in West Marin.

An Oakland man was jailed on a felony count of driving under the influence of alcohol following a rollover crash Sunday on a rural stretch of road in West Marin, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A crash was reported at 8:15 a.m. on Point Reyes-Petaluma Road, 1.3 miles south of San Antonio Road and just south of the Marin-Sonona county border, according to a firefighter at the Hicks Valley Fire Station. Officer Chris Rardin of the CHP said the driver took a curve in the road at an unsafe speed, lost control and crashed into a ditch on the other side of the road, causing the car to overturn.

A 21-year-old passenger from Sunol suffered a laceration on one hand and was transported by ambulance to Petaluma Valley Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The driver, 38-year-old Richard Darnell Sims of Oakland, was found by CHP officers to be impaired and was arrested at 9:23 a.m. He was booked into Marin County Jail and faces a felony charge for being in a DUI-related accident in which somebody was injured. Because he has two or more prior DUI convictions, his bail was set at $50,000.

Rardin said traffic in the area was not significantly impacted. The road was closed for about 10 minutes as a tow truck hauled out the crashed car, he said.
