Collision Leads to Arrest After Empty Alcohol Bottles Fell from Driver's Jacket Pocket

Police say Surjit Kumar, 60, of Petaluma was arrested Sunday afternoon on suspicion of drunken driving

By Bay City News—

A 60-year-old man found with multiple bottles of alcohol in his car was arrested in Petaluma on Sunday afternoon, a police sergeant said.

Officers responded to a report of an accident at Bodega Avenue and Ellis Court around 3:45 p.m., Sgt. Andrew Urton said. A driver, later identified as Petaluma resident Surjit Kumar, was traveling east on Bodega Avenue where he struck an unoccupied parked car, Urton said.

Arriving officers found Kumar standing on the sidewalk waiting to speak with police but he got back into his car and attempted to back up, he said. An officer was able to stop Kumar from fleeing the scene, Urton said. As officers removed Kumar from the car two empty bottles of alcohol fell from his jacket pocket, he said.

Another empty alcohol bottle was found on the driver's seat and a half-empty bottle of alcohol was found on the driver's side door, Urton said. Kumar was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and booked into Sonoma County jail. He is being held in lieu of $5,000 bail.
