Upvalley Cyclist Dies After Collision with Car

Drugs, alcohol were not a factor in Saturday's collision in Deer Park that took the life of a St. Helena man, according to a news report online.

A St. Helena man died Saturday after he collided with a car at the intersection of Deer Park and Sanitarium roads, the St. Helena Star is reporting.

The 54-year-old cyclist was riding westbound on Deer Park Road, when he struck the front of a BMW driven by a Napa resident. The driver was trying to make a left-hand turn to go north on Sanitarium Road, the California Highway Patrol said.

The bicyclist was taken to St. Helena Hospital. The cause of the collision is under investigation, but alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the crash. The accident comes on the heels of at least half a dozen incidents over the past three months in Sonoma and Napa counties where cyclists were killed or injured by drivers.

On Thursday, a Santa Rosa cyclists was injured after a driver chased him and then ran over him on a Santa Rosa golf course. The victim sustained a broken wrist and road rash and was hospitalized. The driver was later arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

Rather be slower and live to see another day, than fast/furious and eventually just another piece of road kill..

Hey, hey, hey, let's keep comments directly relevant to THIS article! My comment: The driver of one vehicle killed the driver of another vehicle because they weren't paying enough attention while operating a vehicle... My two cents: This is a dangerous road, imagine how many more fatalities if PUC puts their eco-village up their!!! For the record, this is the fourth fatality in four years in that 100 yard stretch of pavement.

BTW, there is anti-bicycle bias in the article: "he collided,". "he struck." It implies he hit a stationary object and that the driver of the vehicle (automobile) turning left across the cyclist's right-of-way is innocent and perhaps even the victim. Really???!!!?????!!!

@ Ed Rapp, C Pridmore and Jeffery Write. I think this whole thing is bad and I feel sad for both drivers. I agree with some of all of your points. With Pridmore as hare as lgic goes, it is much harder to see a bike of either kind. With Ed for being a respectable biker and yeah Jeff we all have the right to be on the road. The problem is we are all different and have good days and bad. Unfortunatly it seams there are more bikers who act as if they own the road than bikers who respect the road. I had 3 bikers on by but coming down from angwin into pope valley and one was going back and forth accross the road trying to pass me. I could not figure out where he was long enough to get the hell out of his way. I had a child in my car ready to puke and I'm about to pop a new kid out any day. Who knows what was going on. Were his breaks going out? I would have pulled over if there was a spot, and if I could have keept a location of the biker in view to know I was not going to side swipe him. It will always be hard to share a road built for cars when there is not enough room for both of us side by side. I unfortunatly think biker should not be allowed to ride on roads that do not have 3ft riding room over the white line. For the safety of everyone, driver of all. On the day of this accident, I had just went by. I was sick all day. I feel horible for the family and friends of both. ps sorry for not being a good speller :)
