Sprint cars were doing practice or “hot laps” about an hour before the race when a car traveling at about 90 mph couldn’t negotiate a turn and ran into the gap between the track and the pit row.

A 17-year-old student at Petaluma High School who has been racing for two years has been identified as the driver, but Patch is withholding the name because the driver is a minor and has not been charged.
