From the Petaluma PD:

On Wednesday, April 2, 2014, the Petaluma Police Department received notification from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office that Sheriff’s Office personnel had been involved in a fatal incident in the 200 block of Hoff Road in Kenwood, CA.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office informed Petaluma Police that they were invoking the Sonoma County Law Enforcement Chief’s Association’s Fatal Incident Protocol and requested that the Petaluma Police Department assume the primary role in the investigation.

The Petaluma Police Department summoned the assistance of the evidence specialists from Santa Rosa Police Department to assist in this investigation. SRPD evidence specialists, along with an SRPD supervisor, joined the Petaluma Police Lieutenant assigned to the scene and preceded with processing the crime scene.

The investigation at this point reveals that the law enforcement personnel on scene consisted of Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office sworn personnel and supervisors. Napa County Sheriff’s Office personnel were also at the scene at the time that the gunfire erupted. No other law enforcement personnel were on scene.

The suspect did suffer what appears to be a gunshot wound to his chest. The evidence currently available does not allow us to confirm whether that wound was self-inflicted or a product of law enforcement personnel’s response to the gunfire from the suspect.

The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office personnel responded to the scene earlier this date and removed the suspect’s body. An autopsy is currently scheduled for Monday, April 7.

This is an active criminal investigation. Anyone with information concerning this incident is urged to contact Petaluma Police Detective Tammy Shoemaker at 707.778.4444 or Detective Joel Stemmer at 707.778.4532.
