Petaluma Police Target High Collision Intersection

Lakeville Street at East Washington Street ranks as worst intersection for accidents

 

On the first day of the most car-centric event in Petaluma's annual calendar -- the salute to - drivers are advised to be extra-cautious behind the wheel, especially in the high collision intersections in town.

will be on the lookout this Friday for traffic violators at the number one high collision intersection in the City of Petaluma, at Lakeville Street and East Washington Street.

In 2011, Lakeville Street and East Washington Street had 10 collisions and ranked as the worst intersection for collisions in the City of Petaluma. 

So far in 2012, there have been 3 collisions in the intersection.  Out of the 13 collisions since January 2011, four involved injury and 9 involved property damage only.

Crashes were caused by a variety of violations including right-of-way, unsafe speed, DUI, pedestrian right-of-way, and unsafe starting.  Officers will be watching for all violations at the intersection and conducting enforcement stops.  Motorists are advised to drive safely through the intersection as citations will be issued for observed violations.  

Traffic Safety remains a high priority for the .  In the last 25 years there have been 57 people killed in Petaluma.  Traffic Collisions accounted for 40 (70%) of those killed and the remaining 17 (30%) were the result of other violent criminal acts.
