The goal is to improve relations between the department and the community and recruit new volunteers for the agency, said Police Chief Patrick Williams.

The course is open to anyone 18 years old and without a felony conviction. Petaluma residents or people who work in town are given priority, although residents of other cities may be accepted based on available space.
