Police Arrest Petaluma Man on DUI, Child Endangerment Charges

A Petaluma man was arrested early Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence and child endangerment after he allegedly refused to pull over then ran from his car to get away from police, leaving his two sons behind, police said.

The suspect, 34-year-old Agustin Arango, was driving south on Petaluma Boulevard North at about 12:15 a.m. when a police sergeant saw him swerve into oncoming traffic and almost hit another car, according to police.

The sergeant tried to pull over Arango, but he continued for several blocks without stopping, police said. Arango stopped near 21 Lakeville St., got out of the car and ran north along the railroad tracks, according to police.

Officers found him hiding in some bushes nearby. He appeared to be intoxicated, and investigators suspect he was driving under the influence with his 11-year-old and 15-year-old sons in the car, police said.

Both boys told officers they had asked their father not to flee from police when he refused to stop the vehicle, police said. The incident is Arango's third DUI arrest, according to police. He was also arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, resisting arrest and evading arrest with a vehicle.

Arango was booked into Sonoma County Jail and the boys were released to their mother.
