Police Warn of Bogus Magazine Solicitors

One, possibly two, individuals are selling fraudulent magazine subscriptions door-to-door

The next time someone comes to your door selling a magazine subscription, think twice before you reach for your wallet.

Petaluma Police are warning the public about a magazine subscription scam that has occurred in recent days.

They say two men have approached residents offering to sign them up for a magazine subscription. One victim gave a check, while the other handed over cash for the fake subscriptions.

Both incidents occurred in the West Side neighborhood of Joelle Heights, located off West Street. At least one of the suspects is described as a Black man, skinny and about 5’9 tall. A full description of the second suspect was not available.

The men said they were affiliated with a company called Opportunity Sales, but the city says no business licenses or solicitor permits have been recently issued for magazine sales.

Police are reminding the public to ask for a solicitors permit and business license if approached by anyone with offers to sign up for a magazine.
