Scam Alert: 'Desperate' Man Sells Fake Gold Bar Outside Kmart for $5K

Petaluma police are warning the public about scam in which suspects try to sell fake gold bars to unsuspecting victims.

Police said a woman was outside a Kmart Thursday when a man approached her and said he wanted to sell her a gold bar worth $10,000 for $5,000, because he needed money for an injured family member.

A second man then approached the woman, acted like he was interested in the gold bar and said he could help verify the gold.

The victim retrieved the funds from her bank, and bought the gold colored bar. The bar turned out to be a fake.

Police described the suspects as Hispanic men ages 60 and 35.
