The Petaluma Police Department is warning regional residents of a fraudulent telephone scam that originates from number (253) 719-5126.
The caller tells the person receiving the call that he or she the subject of a lawsuit in Washington, and they are to call back and speak to an investigating detective with the federal government, police said.
Area code 253 is from Washington state.
Investigation reveals this is a fraudulent attempt to get people to pay money, and Petaluma officials have alerted federal authorities, police said.
