Smoke Detector Alerts Resident to Neighboring House Fire

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but is not believed to be suspicious in nature.

Firefighters battled a one-alarm blaze after an alert resident reported hearing a fire detector sounding at a neighboring home in Rohnert Park on Saturday morning, fire officials said.

At 9:22 a.m. fire officials received a 911 call reporting that a smoke detector was sounding at a residence in the 4400 block of Heath Circle near Golf Course Drive.

Neither the concerned neighbor nor firefighters could see or smell smoke coming from the residence, fire officials said.

Upon arrival, firefighters searched the exterior of the home and located a blaze burning in the kitchen. The fire had already burned a section of cabinets and was spreading to the ceiling, fire officials said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze within minutes of making entry into the home, according to fire officials.

The residents were not home at the time and no firefighters were injured. Fire officials said that thanks to the working smoke detector and the alert neighbor, the fire was quickly detected and contained.

Damage has been estimated to be around $35,000, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but is not believed to be suspicious in nature, according to Rohnert Park fire officials.
