Suspected Nighttime Burglar Flees in Cargo Truck, Arrested

Windsor resident Ryan Lester Hughes, 37, was arrested Thursday night on burglary, gun and resisting arrest charges.

A private security firm and a video surveillance system helped Sonoma County authorities capture a man suspected of breaking into a Larkfield business Thursday night and trying to escape in a stolen truck.

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Department and Windsor Police Department responded to a business in the 100 block of Lystra Court in Larkfield about 10 p.m. after a security company said it had used a video feed to spot someone inside the business after hours.

Officials arrived to a cargo truck leaving the scene, according to a press release. The truck fled from authorities until hitting a stop sign near Airport Boulevard and Faught Road, the press release states.

The driver bailed out of the truck and was found hiding in a nearby apartment complex, sheriff's officials said.

The driver fought with deputies, and was seen trying to pull something from the front of his waistband, according to the press release. Deputies discovered a loaded handgun in the suspect's pants. During the struggle, the suspect and two deputies were injured; all were treated at a local hospital and released.

The driver was identified as Ryan Lester Hughes, a 37-year-old Windsor resident. He had an outstanding felony warrant out for his arrest, according to the press release. He was arrested and was also charged with battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, burglary, vehicle theft and gun charges. His bail was set at $330,000.
