Two Men Pose As Police Officers and Enter Petaluma House

Petaluma police have issued a prowler alert after two men posing as San Jose police officers entered a woman's home through an unlocked front door around 6 p.m. Thursday.

One of the two Hispanic males told the 66-year-old female resident in the 500 block of Stuart Drive that they were San Jose police officers and he was checking on her welfare, Sgt. Steve Nelson said.

The two men showed the women identification that the woman immediately suspected was fake, Nelson said.

When the woman called the Petaluma police's dispatch center to report the suspicious suspects, one of the men got on the phone and told the dispatcher he was checking on the woman's welfare and then hung up, Nelson said.

The two suspects then left in a white, newer-model extended cab pickup truck with blue stripes near the bumper, Nelson said.

When contacted, San Jose police said they did not have any officers in the Petaluma area, Nelson said.

Police are advising residents to keep their doors locked at all times, and to ask to see a picture identification when contacted by officers in plain clothes.

Both suspects are 30-40 years old, 5 feet 7 inches, 155 pounds with black hair and brown eyes, Nelson said.
