Carrillo Will Not Face Felony Charges Stemming From San Diego Arrest

Arrested September 3 during outing in San Diego; Supervisor says he was defending a female friend

Sonoma County Supervisor Efren Carrillo will not be charged with felony assault charges in wake of his Sept. 3 arrest in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, the Press Democrat is reporting.

A San Diego Police detective told the paper that a captain in the department has deemed the case a misdemeanor and the city attorney will handle the case rather than the San Diego County district attorney. He also said that police could recommend that no charges will be filed.

Carrillo, currently in Russia, hasn't said much publicly on the case, although he did issue a statement saying that he was defending female friends and that he is eager to tell his "side of the story."

Carrillo, 31, grew up in Santa Rosa and has a black belt in karate. The person injured in the fight is said to have suffered "serious injuries."
