City Council Meeting

The council will once again discuss whether to place a sales tax increase initiative on the November ballot. A half percent increase would generate an additional $5 million a year for the city. But many others believe that raising taxes while the economy is still weak is not a step in the right direction and will not be supported by a majority of voters.

The measure would cost up to $30,000 to be placed on the ballot and have to be approved by at least 66 percent of voters in order to pass.

Also at tonight's meeting, the city will discuss the environmental assessment of the Trestle Rehabilitation Project. Despite earlier suggestion to rebuild the trestle, the city is now looking at rehabilitating the site using a variety of historic preservation grants. The cost of the work is estimated upwards of $4 million.
