Is Petaluma Ready for a New Tax?

The city says it can't meet its needs, but a local taxpayer group says more cuts are needed.

 

 

The Petaluma City Council has authorized City Manager John Brown to commission a poll of citizens to test their appetite for a new tax to fund city services.

According to Petaluma360 the poll will be designed to find out what type and how much of a tax residents will support.

While 62 percent of voters supported a $52.00 parcel tax last year to pay for parks, the measure failed because Proposition 13 requires a two-thirds majority for a parcel tax to pass.

Petaluma360 reports that the Sonoma County Taxpayers Association will oppose any effort to increase taxes until the city finds ways to lower its pension obligations.
