More Road Improvements in 2013, But No Highway 101 Widening

Four infrastructure projects taking shape this year

Four infrastructure projects are in store for 2013, although widening Highway 101 between north Petaluma and Novato is not on the list due to a lack of funding.

The planned projects include rebuilding the Highway 101 interchange at Old Redwood as well as four bridges over the Petaluma River and Highway 116, the Press Democrat is reporting.

The interchange at Petaluma Boulevard South will also be reconfigured, widening lanes and installing traffic signals, along with improvements to Highway 101 frontage roads south of Petaluma, according to the Press Democrat.

The work is funded by Measure M, the quarter-cent sales tax approved in 2004 and has already raised $140 million. Still, an estimated $1 billion is needed to complete all improvements promised to voters, including three lanes of highway through Petaluma.

New highway lanes have been added both south and north of Petaluma, but there are currently not enough funds for additional lanes through Petaluma. That has prompted calls that Measure M be renewed once it expires in 2022.
