Petaluma Police Chief Proposes Crackdown on Abandoned Homes

Abandoned, eyesore properties would be registered and their owners fined up to $1,000 for failing to clean them up under a plan proposed by Petaluma's new police chief, according to the Press Democrat.

Petaluma police chief Pat Williams wants to place the city's more than 300 vacant, foreclosed homes on a registry and fine their owners up to $1,000 if the properties are not maintained, according to a report in the Press Democrat.

Williams established a similar program in Desert Hot Springs before taking his Petaluma job, the newspaper reports.

The goal is to keep vacant homes from becoming eyesores and degrading neighborhood property values, according to the Press-Democrat report.
