Road Summit to be Held Next Week

County can't afford to not maintain local roads, group maintains

The decrepit state of Sonoma County roads and how to fix them will be discussed at next week's meeting of Save Our Sonoma Roads, a new group that is trying to come up with creative ways of funding road maintenance projects.

The meeting will  be held on Wednesday, March 7 at Sally Tomatoes in Rohnert Park starting at 5pm and will feature Phil Demery, the director of transportation and public works for Sonoma County.

Demery will talk about the current state of Sonoma County roads, road funding and what the future looks like for our roads. Time will be allocated for questions from the audience.

Save Our Sonoma Roads is a group of Sonoma County citizens and organizations formed to advocate fixing city and county roads. The goal of SOS Roads.org is to persuade elected officials to adequately fund the restoration of county roads and city streets.

Since 2008 the Board of Supervisors has reduced road funding from the general fund by 46 percent. The condition of our roads is directly correlated to insufficient funding for road maintenance and preservation. SOS Roads believes the current level of funding is wrong and unsustainable because our county roads are beginning to fail.
