Sonoma County Libraries to Consider Fee Increases

Includes fees for reserving books and increasing fines for late returns

The Sonoma County Library Commission -- which governs public libraries in Sonoma County including Petaluma Regional Library-- will discuss possible increases in library fines and fees at its May 7 meeting.  The topic is on the agenda for 7 p.m. at the Rohnert Park-Cotati Regional Library, 6250 Lynne Conde Way in Rohnert Park.

“The Commission will not take action on Monday night but may vote on increases at a future meeting," said Commission Chair Julia Freis. "This discussion is the time for people to make their views known on paying more, including higher fines for overdue items and potential fees for requesting items.”

Libraries in Sonoma County have  and last year implemented reduced library hours as a cost-saving measure.

An increase in fees would be the second major push to balance the library budgets.
