Electric Vehicle Charging Station Installation Starts This Week

Electric vehicle charging station at City Center Plaza parking lot - installation starts this Thursday

An electric vehicle charging station will be installed at the City Center Plaza parking lot this Thursday, November 15th and should take about 2-3 weeks to complete.  The electric vehicle charging station was fully funded through the ChargePoint America Energy Grant Program.  The grant funding includes:

  • Purchase cost fully paid
  • All installation costs
  • Two-year warranty on parts
  • Coulomb’s ChargePoint Network Subscription
  • Access to website and coulomb EV chargeing network
  • Collect and manage user fees (administrative costs)

One of the main reasons that we are installing the charging station is due to new state legislature (AB 1493) which mandates 1.4 million zero emission vehicles to be on the road by 2025.  The City Council approved the installation of the electric vehicle charging station as well as a user fee to recover electric usage and operating costs.

Seriously, who is going to use this? My guess is that it will end up being another unusable parking space.

Who will pay for the power used to recharge the vehicles? I remember the Novato Costco put in a few charging stations. They lasted less than a year then they were taken out. Electric vehicles are not a good thing right now. Too costly and not enough range. And most of them are weird looking...

Thank you for your questions and feedback. A user fee will be established to recover electric usage and operating costs at an estimated rate of $1.75 for the first hour and $1.25 per hour after that. The other costs (e.g. installation, administration, warranty, etc.) are fully funded through the ChargePoint America Grant Program. There are no statistics on the number of electric vehicle owners in Rohnert Park, however, ChargePoint America will be collecting data to determine vehicle use and charging patterns and If it is determined that the charging station is seldom used, then it will be removed. Hope this helps and thank you again for commenting.
