52 Weeks of Petaluma: Week 2

Its week 2 of my Petaluma inspired photo project. This week its all about the doors around town. Step in a check it out.

Here we are, its week 2 and time for my next submission.  This week I decided to focus on doors (no pun intended, but I will take what I can get).  How often do we really look at the doors we walk through every day?  I wanted to do a tour and shoot as many doors in downtown Petaluma that I could.  Well I took a couple of hours and walked the streets taking photos of door after door.  Some of you may have even seen me out there, I was the tall guy taking pictures of all the doors.  Anyway, I was crossing the street over and over, shooting different angles of different types of doors, sometimes I would be getting low on the ground shooting up and other times I would get as high as I could.  This was the first time that I have gone out and taken pictures strictly of one type of object, and it was a very good experience, It made me really look at the subject in a different light, and made me take a hard look at the details of the doors.

Well after my door tour I went home, I put my memory card into my computer and couldn’t wait to see what I had captured.  After the photos finished loading, sure enough, there were a ton of pictures of doors.  Although I knew what I was doing while out walking around, I wasn’t really quite ready to see that many photos of doors on my computer screen.  What else could I have been expecting from a day of photographing doors?  I did have a great time out there, and I believe that I came away with a couple of photos that I can be proud of.

Before my door walk I had it in my mind that I would do this photo in black and white.  I personaly think that a door can make a good black and white subject, especially some of the old timey doors that can be found downtown.  So I stuck to my guns when I got home and chose the most colorful photo as my favorite one to submit.  I changed it to black and white and tweaked the contrast and tones, and I think I came up with a finished product that looks even better than the color photo.  This particular door is down American Alley, and I have noticed it many times but have never really thought to photograph it, and now I am truly glad that the opportunity came about.  Thanks for taking the time to look, and as always comments and suggestions are always welcome.  I got a couple of good suggestions last week and they are definitely on my list of things to do.

I think that showing The Hunger Games in this venue is a mistake. These outdoor family film showingsRead More do attract families, and frequently families with younger children. It would be close to child abuse to permit a younger child to watch this movie. Not so sure it would be a good idea for teens either. I believe that this choice was not well thought out. I hope it can be changed to something that would be beneficial for all ages to see. For example, I recommend a film called "Like Stars on Earth" directed by Aamir Khan. A very moving and thoughtful film.
