Class of 'Digital Connectors' Graduates at Boys & Girls Clubs

The Comcast program addresses the "digital divide" for young people in the North Bay.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Marin & Southern Sonoma Counties graduated 18 students on May 30 from their Comcast Digital Connectors program, providing the region’s young adults with the digital skills needed to succeed and share back with their communities.

The Comcast Digital Connectors program is designed to help low-income communities understand the benefits of broadband Internet service, giving young adults the resources to develop critical skills—from operating computers and understanding the mechanics to digital literacy and leadership.

As part of the program, graduates then share those skills with their families and communities through community-based service projects.

“The Digital Connectors program has provided invaluable curriculum to the young adults at the Boys and Girls Club of Marin & Southern Sonoma Counties,” said David Solo, President and CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Marin and Southern Sonoma Counties.

“In addition to delivering critical digital literacy skills, this program provides our local youth with mentorship, resources and encouragement to help them succeed and pass their skills on to their communities," he said. "In Sonoma and Marin there are no other programs that wrap training on technical skills, inter-personal relationships, community service and financial fluency into one course. We’ve helped these graduates kick start their futures and have given them a better advantage for entering our community’s workforce.”

“We see the digital divide as a pressing issue, and as a technology company, it is our role to do what we can to equip students and their families with the necessary skills to succeed in school and beyond,” said Hank Fore, Regional SVP, Comcast California. “We’re glad we were able to partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of Marin & Southern Sonoma Counties on an issue that deeply impacts these communities.”

About Digital Connecters

Comcast Digital Connectors was created in 2009 to help low-income communities understand the benefits of using broadband, and making it part of their lives (what’s known as “broadband adoption”). The Comcast Digital Connectors program takes that mission a step further by making it possible for hundreds of young adults ages 14 to 21 to develop their skills in using computers, applications and the Internet, and then take what they’ve learned out into their communities to make a difference.

Since Comcast Digital Connectors launched, more than 2,000 young people have participated in the program, providing more than 100,000 hours of community service by sharing their technology skills.
