EXCEL Program Offers Up Curiosity, Challenge to Local Students

Summer programs offers 50 classes on animation, crash and burn chemistry, digital filmmaking, crime scene investigation and more

 

EXCEL for Youth, an innovative program that gives students a chance to pursue subjects traditionally not offered in school, is recruiting for its summer semester.

The program is open to all Sonoma County students grades 4 through 9 and is designed to foster curiosity and involvement. There are nearly 50 classes including 3D Modeling and Animation, Crash and Burn Chemistry, Digital Filmmaking, Crime Scene Investigation, Metal Jewelry, Pre-Med for Kids and more.

The accelerated classes are held on the Sonoma State University campus and use college labs, guest speakers and field trips. More than 20,000 Sonoma County students have participated since EXCEL began in 1982. Today it’s run by Alison Marks, a professional artist and educator who lives in Petaluma. (Marks is also one of the co-founders of the Petaluma Arts Council.)

Summer classes range from approximately $160-$185 for 1-week classes, and $340-$375 for 2-week classes. For more information, visit www.sonoma.edu/exed/excel
