New Lit Crosswalks to be Installed Near Casa Grande

There have been at least three pedestrians struck by cars since December 2010

The city will put in two lighted crosswalks near Casa Grande High School, following at least three incidents in the area.

One lighted crosswalk will be installed at Ely Boulevard South and Spoonbill Avenue, the site of two accidents since December 2010. The other will be installed at Casa Grande Road at Crinella Drive, where one accident has occurred since 2010.

The crossings are already marked, but the city and police hope the lit crosswalks will make it safer for students to cross the four lanes of traffic moving in both directions.

The work will cost $132,000 and be funded by a grant from the Highway Safety Improvement Program.

Pedestrians need to remember that these crosswalks are not magical force fields that stop cars from hitting you. You still must look both ways before crossing the street. Do not leave the sidewalk if a vehicle is approaching close enough to constitute an immediate hazard. Keep your eyes on any approaching vehicles, not down at the ground or your cell phone. Walk quickly and act like you don't want to get hit by a car. Those cars are driven by humans and we are not very good drivers. In a game of Car vs Pedestrian, the Car always wins, regardless of who has the right of way. If your driving, please observe the speed limit, maintain a high visual horizon, and scan the road for pedestrians. These crosswalks are an unnecessary and avoidable expense.

About time! ... tired of reading about accidents in this quiet part of town. Just because they are distracted teenagers does not mean you can run them down!
